This is an appropriation from "Jonah and the Whale" (1621) by Pieter Lastman
and "Ponyo" (2008) written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, animated by Studio Ghibli
This is an appropriation from “Ponyo” that is an animation film directed by Hayao Miyazaki and “Jonah and the Whale” by Pieter Lastman.
Hayao Miyazaki is a well known Japanese director for his outstanding films and often writes a script using the components from structure analysis of mythology for his storytelling.
The scene of entering a cave or whale’s belly is a typical motif that indicates death and rebirth of the hero in myths all over the world. The story of Jonah and the Whale, from the Bible, is the same.
I have overlapped both works, as they have the same framework in terms of mythology.
